If I am an atheist, can I still take the children to Carols by Candlelight?

I confess that I am a  soft atheist. I still enjoy reading my stars and other illogical things, especially when they make me feel better than being confronted with pure reality. I also occasionally take issue with my scientific friends for failing to adequately respect the mystery of life and for putting too much faith in the little bit of knowledge we are able to prove.  Normally I am also content to live and let live in matters of belief, but when fundamentalists begin to meddle in politics or seek to impose their beliefs on the rest of us, particularly in schools and science classes and with respect to evolution, abortion and population control, it is time to come out of the closet and take a stand, before the new Dark Ages and witch trials begin. There are many things about our celebrations at this time of year which are very appealing such as the carol singing, Myer’s windows, getting together with family, friends and colleagues , Christmas t...

In search of style and substance

Nope, not my boyfriend. See end of post Get the look for only $ 225 so you too can look " as if you've been feeding the pigs and fixing the fences" even if you have never seen either  * They say “Do not read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.” Well try looking for  clothes and not being a size 8.  I don't often buy clothes, but after coming across some particularly revolting photos of myself someone had posted on my newly rediscovered facebook page several Christmases ago, I vowed I would mend my ways and find something simple yet elegant to wear on my forthcoming family occasion.  The only choices seem to be looking like a mother -of -the -bride/ dowager matron (standard boutiques for women over 20) in pastel plastics, an aging hippie (Indian Clothes) or like a clown – lurid colours and very strange details  or someone out on day release from an asylum (in expensive fashionable boutiques for larger women) also mostly in plastic. I'...

Changing definitions of family

I was feeling pretty demoralised while walking around the shops yesterday as I often do when looking for clothes, when a really nice girl at the Body Shop offered me a free hand pampering session. Before that I had been planting out my poor miserable trees so that they wouldn't die while I was away in our nation's capital and my hands were quite rough and sore, so I was in the process of  trying a free sample in passing. It was however, such a pleasant and soothing experience that I ended up  buying something small and she handed me an entry form to a competition. I was astounded at the exclusions and how interestingly they reflected the times and changing attitudes. It wasn't just the usual 'immediate family and friends of employees.' Here's the full bit. "5. Employees (and their immediate families) of the Promoter, participating ‘The Body Shop’ stores and agencies associated with this promotion (including but not limited to The Body Shop At Hom...

Christmas wishes from the heart

I friend made a great typo yesterday in that she wished me "Peave and Joy" for Christmas. Yes, she got that spot on I thought. I do a lot of of peeving. It's part of my job description. I don't mind Joy either. She's my opposite number mother - in -law and her partner Mike, is good value too. I don't actually want too much peace. I'm looking forward to lots of fun and excitement and there's not much chance of it anyway with the little fairies present. Saw a great sign too, at the little jewellry shop that always delivers a thought for the day. I'm working on it. Peave and Joy to you too!

Confessions of an invisible woman

Thanks for posting this one on Facebook Bec! It said that 36 people                                                                                                     had ripped it already, so I assume it's OK if I do it too Quoted from: twentythree : 26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lptnv2U7cu1qzpe8uo1_500.jpg I blog therefore I am. Thanks to all the people or the two or three in five different countries who clicked several hundred times. According to the stats I now have 272 Aussie readers again and about 1093 for last month, so you are allowed to stop clicking. Either the stats are back up, or Blogger ...

Only 12 more Non – Shopping days till Christmas!

Adbusters want to extend their traditional Buy Nothing Day over the entire Christmas Shopping season. Buy Nothing Day, begun in 1992 is now celebrated 64 countries around the world and co –founder, Kalle Lasn   “..wants us to bypass the tinsel, the tree and the tat and go cold turkey on consumerism for the whole festive period.” It does seem like a more effective way to send a message to large corporations than occupying Wall Street. It is also better for the planet, although I will admit, not quite as good for the economy. Wake up companies! We aren't all shopping online (well, only a little bit!). If you want to stay in business and keep the economy going, then make things which are really needed and which will last. Forget the planned obsolescence, the gourmet pet foods and the packaging.   Use our resources wisely. Don’t manufacture or trade in goods that create unnecessary or intractable waste, either in production, use or disposal. Services are better still. ...

Celebrations of continued existence*

" There are things known and things unknown, and in between are the doors." - Jim Morrison  In other good news, one of my favourite and most brilliant techies has helped me to break into my facebook account for the first time in four years. I had not only forgotten my username and password and the dodgy email account I used, but I kept getting the answer to the security question wrong too. Sorry about not responding to all those messages. Yes, well I am pleased to report that I am alive and well, if a little subdued and hung over. Apparently, much as I hate social media - do my friends really want to know that I am now going to bed or having breakfast?  -apparently you simply no longer exist if you don't update your facebook account. As I move on to my own annual celebration of continued existence I am inspired by the words of Sophie Tucker when asked the secret of her long life," Keep breathing."  I also like this one: "Don’t ever save anything for...
