Cook. As the crow or the helicopter flies Mt. Cook is a mere 23.3. Km away from Franz Joseph, but because there are only three passes over the Southern Alps, getting there by car involves a gruelling 6 -7 hour drive -something to look forward to tomorrow. Now I know why there were so many helicopters in Queenstown. After Haast Pass, the highway follows the coast along a hard basalt ridge which resisted erosion by glaciers.
